Hello y’all!
Being Texican is not easy. We have live with thousands of history from the Mexicas to the Revolution plus cowboys and Barbecue Sauce. I believe it is important to start in square one: What does Mexican mean? I began my search on the internet and dictionaries where no help. The Diccionario de la Real Academia Española, considered the bible for Spanish only stated:
“mexicano:
1. adj. Natural de México.” (native of Mexico)
That was of no help at all. I have known many “foreigners” who feel more Mexican than I do at times. Culture, not only Mexican, is about a great deal of factors that construct a complex relationship between speech, history, food, music, ideals, attitudes…etc. Being “something” is an experience.
Which led me to look for answers in blogs, listen to what the people have to say about being Mexican. There were many but the one I liked best was “Cyber Holocausto” by T-boo. He found his answers through different yahoo! Sites that I had been looking around and thanked him for getting them together for me =)
- Being Mexican is one of the nicest things that can happen to you
- Being Mexican is to carry in your blood the color, the happiness, the faith, the imagination, the fire and so many other things that differentiate a Mexican from other human beings. To be Mexican you have to be committed to Mexico, feel proud of our roots, mayan, Aztec or whatever. It is to be respectful for what we have, for what we have in the end is who we are. Being Mexican is much more than being born in Mexico; it’s a commitment, an emotion, pride, power, strength…
- It’s the best thing there is
- It’s to be proud of our roots, loving freedom and over all justice.
- Well, being born in Mexico, feeling proud of Mexico even if it is not well, we should fight to make it better.
- Being Mexican is picking up the crumbs the Americans leave behind
And many others, but these were my favorites. So, my personal conclusion is that Mexicans are a prideful people, happy to be whom they are and daunted by the US by our “little brother” position. I know this over generalizes and exceptions are abundant, but I do think we live with this feeling of inferiority of so called “first world countries”. Stand up and be proud Mexico you have so much more than you think =) Proud people of the Eagle and Leopard warriors that gave their lives for freedom, proud people of the land and heart, of a thousand beautiful songs and magical food. Deep faith, honoring the dead, remembering our past and working everyday for a better world: be proud of Mexico.
